COERR Mae Sot and Kanchanaburi supported transfer of Karen’s Traditional Poems and Song Lyrics,
Wrist tying and Handicraft to the Youth

   COERR Mae Sot supported “The traditional Pagagayaw Karen poems and song lyrics” as a Karen cultural preservation and inheritance to Karen communities. It was aimed that Pagagayaw Karen poems and lyrics sung by Karen ancestors which was unique and beautiful were made known to the young generation and still alive in the present. The traditional Pagagayaw Karen poems and song lyrics activity was held in Ban Nupo Temporary Shelter on August 13, 2022 with 30 participants of 25 females and 5 males.

   COERR also supported “Karen Wrist Tying and Blessing Ceremony” which is the ceremony of calling upon the spirits of the children to come back and to stay with parents and receive blessings from their grandparents and the elders. This gathering activity which created unity and love amongst Karen community was held in Ban Umpiem and Ban Nupo temporary shelters on August 11, 2022. In Ban Umpiem temporary shelter, there were 450 participants of 280 females and 170 males. In Ban Nupo temporary shelter, there were 360 participants. The ceremony was also held in Ban Mae La temporary shelter on August 27, 2022 with 51 participants of 46 females and 5 males.

   COERR Kanchanaburi promoted the inheritance of Karen traditional handicrafts to the younger generation in Ban Tham Hin Temporary Shelter, Suan Phueng district of Ratchaburi Province on July 19, 2022. The weaving and embroidery work were taught by experienced elderly to 35 young females and males who were interested in learning and practicing these skills. This activity made elders happy, lively, proud and feeling comforted as they were admired as the Giver of Wisdom while the younger were glad to be local wisdom inheritors.
